MICRO and MACRO MODIFICATIONS APPLICABLE TO GEAR TEETH
LICAT, a company renowned since 1961 in the power transmission sector for the industrial, military, railway, and energy industries, organized a technical seminar titled “MICRO and MACRO MODIFICATIONS APPLICABLE TO GEAR TEETH (EXTRA HIGH LICAT PROFILE, CROWNING, and TIP RELIEF).” The event began with greetings and the presentation of the program by Paolo AGOSTEO, CEO of LICAT, who outlined the investment plan in technology and human resources for the benefit of LICAT since the acquisition of the company’s shares in February 2022. He also passionately and enthusiastically presented the goals set by the company’s management, introducing the speech by Davide CUCCHI, COO of LICAT.
Cucchi illustrated the paradigm shift that has been underway for about two years, which has led to the vision of a “VALUE-ADDED” company, not only in terms of technology and services provided to the end customer but also in the company’s policies concerning quality, sustainability, and social impact. In other words, a new modern, ethical, sustainable, European business model. Cucchi concluded his speech by providing the audience with an overview of the products/services and the available technologies/technical skills, highlighting the collaboration with the academic and university world. An excellent example of this collaboration is the scientific presentation by Professor Carlo ROSSO (Associate Professor in Machine Design at D.meas Polytechnic University of Turin and co-founder of GeDy TrAss).
Professor Carlo ROSSO captured the audience’s attention, which primarily consisted of engineering and technical department managers from client companies, focusing on the macro and micro modifications applicable to precision gear teeth (known as LICAT EXTRA HIGH PROFILE, CROWNING, and TIP RELIEF) to improve performance in terms of vibrations, transmission errors, noise, bending resistance, resonances, etc. After a general introduction on nomenclature, reference standards, and the advantages of LICAT EXTRA HIGH PROFILE, CROWNING, and TIP RELIEF, he showed how, starting from two different studies on gear meshing excitation modeling by Professors Kahraman and Singh in 1990 (for modeling and calculating Static Transmission Error—STE, they consider excitation as external) and Professor Parker in 2000 (who, for STE modeling and calculation, considers intrinsic self-excitation of the system), he proposed a study integrating both models for STE calculation into a single model. This model also allows the analysis and calculation of DTE (Dynamic Transmission Error) and the non-linearities of the dynamic system. Professor Rosso’s study is the foundation for the development of the GedyTrass software, a numerical analysis tool supporting design from the preliminary stage—where the optimal transmission layout must be defined—up to the final stage of detailing the components, using a series of tools implemented in the software and developed by the Research Group led by Professor Rosso and Engineer Fabio Bruzzone (co-founder of GedyTrass and researcher at the Polytechnic University of Turin). Professor Rosso concluded his speech by handing over to Engineer Ciliberti, Design Authority of LICAT S.r.l.
Engineer Francesco CILIBERTI, who has been the Technical Department Manager at LICAT for about 25 years, concluded the seminar by building on the previous presentations and illustrating LICAT’s capabilities in terms of methodologies, technologies, expertise, and ongoing collaborations with the academic world for the development of high-value and high-tech products, appreciated by both designers of high-criticality applications and the industrial world where LICAT has been operating for over 60 years. Engineer Ciliberti also highlighted LICAT’s extensive range of special tools for producing high-contact-ratio gear profiles, providing concrete examples of diagrams from internal production.
Attendees received a copy of the book “Gear Wheels – Design and Construction,” written and edited by Rosso-Bruzzone-Ciliberti, published by libreriauniversitaria.it, March 2023.
The event concluded with a brunch offered to participants in the outdoor area adjacent to the conference room.
